As we are learning, the internet is part of our lives with over 50% of the population connected.

Last week we spoke about pictures and how effective they are at communicating various messages on the Internet. Today we are going to bring this question a little bit further, and look at the impact of a sequence of images which is better known as ‘video’.

Facts Section

The term ‘video’ comes from Latin and it means “I see”.

And when talking about video, we are actually looking at short or longer films.

According to the Wikipedia, the history of film spans over a hundred years, from the latter part of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. Motion pictures developed gradually from a carnival novelty to one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment, and mass media in the 20th century. Motion picture films have had a substantial impact on the arts, technology, and politics.

In today’s world, when the Internet shapes our lives, we see what incredible difference video makes when used on websites.

Today, YouTube has 200 million unique users each month and has the 6th largest audience on the Internet (Source: Nielsen/NetRatings, US only, March 2008).

Now you can view videos even on your mobile phone: About 3 million wireless subscribers in the United States streamed TV or played video content on their phone in the fourth quarter of 2005, representing only 1.5 percent of the year-end U.S. subscriber base, according to Telephia.

So what is the secret power of video and how can it improve our communication, be it sharing stories with friends, teaching martial arts or promoting your business?
